Volodymyr-Volynskyi historical museum of O. Dvernytsky

In 1887 for the sake of preserving and studying monuments of antiquity the community of Volodymyr-Volynskyi created an Ancient repository, that included the oldest collection of antiquities of Volyn. At the beginning of XX century in the collection of this Ancient repository, which became a prototype for the current museum, hundreds of valuable exhibits were kept: old prints, manuscripts (including Gospel of the XVI century), icons, coins. The museum was headed by the local historian and enthusiast, a nobleman O.M. Dvernytsky (1838-1906), head of the St.Volodymyr Brotherhood.

A lot of exhibits of the Volodymyr-Volynskyi Ancient repository were given to Kharkiv museums during the World War I. In the interwar period, the museum was located in the buildings of Dominican monastery, an architectural monument of XV-XVIII centuries.

Currently, there are around 20 000 exhibits of the main fund in the museum: archaeology, numismatics, iconography, arts and crafts, ethnography; written documents, old prints, photographs.

Tours to the museum exposition of the historical period of Volodymyr reign from the oldest times and until XX century are held regularly, as well as tours to the architectural and archaeological monuments of Volodymyr Volynskyi and its region. Researchers of the museum study the history of Volodymyr oblast, take part in many scientific and local history conferences, archaeological and ethnographic expeditions, conduct educational work with students of local schools and students. Thematic exhibitions and personal exhibitions of artists are held regularly on the territory of the museum.

The museum cooperates with local history museums of Volyn and Rivne, Lviv National Scientific Library of Stefanyk, as well as with Zamojski Museum (Poland). Currently, Volodymyr-Volynskyi historical museum is located in one the most picturesque buildings of the city – an architectural monument of the beginning of XIX century.
