Horodok

One of the oldest cities in Lviv region. It is located above the river Vereshchytsia (which was once flooded and navigable) 25 km from Lviv. The city received the Magdeburg right in 1389.

In the past, the city was of great economic importance as an important center of salt trade due to its convenient location, so contemporaries called it “Salt Town”. In the scientific literature, the city is sometimes called the Galician Town or the Town near Lviv. During the Polish rule, the city received a second name – “Grudek Jagiellonian”, in honor of Prince of Lithuania and King of Poland Wladyslaw II Jagiello, who loved this city and often came here for recreation and hunting.

The town was also famous for the Horodotsky pond, the beach on which was a cult place of rest of all Galicia. And this is not surprising, because at the end of the XIX century there was a yacht club, a tennis court. According to the stories of the locals, young Ivan Franko also liked to rest on the pond.

In Austro-Hungarian times, as in most western Ukrainian cities, many Jews lived here. The first Jewish settlers appeared here in 1444. In 1908 there were 13 banks in Horodok, 10 of which belonged to Jews. The town, though a small town, is rich in monuments of sacred architecture, which fill it with soul. The city managed to preserve the characteristic medieval buildings. The oldest monument of Horodok is an ancient settlement, the contours of which can be traced even today.

Later, a castle was built on this place, destroyed in 1611. tatars, later there was a city park.

Longin Ozarkevich’s house is located on Martovycha Street. It was a kind of cultural and educational center of the city. It was here that Ukrainian poetry was read, music of different epochs and styles, as well as folk songs were played. Ivan Franko, artists Ivan Trush, Oleksa Novakivsky, Olena Kulchytska and her sister Olga were guests in the house. Today it is a district library
